Before signing on the dotted line, as it were, you should take the time to make sure you are getting the most for your money. This means you’ll want to approach buying car insurance carefully and with some knowledge of what you want to accomplish. To better do this, there are some standard question you should ask before the purchase.
What Coverage Is Required?
Since each state has different requirements, and car dealerships have even more stringent requirements, you will need to find out exactly what is required for your particular needs. Start by asking the dealership where you purchased the car, and then check with your local DMV. But the final questions will almost always be directed directly at a prospective agent, who will either know the answers, or know how to get them for you.
What Do Different Coverages Mean To Me?
This actually entails a series of questions, and the answers may vary somewhat from one insurance company to the next. Full coverage, PIP, No-Fault, and many other types of policy are often available, so talk to your agent about what is required, what is advised, and what you will actually have to have.
Who Is Covered?
Find out whether family members or friends who borrow your car will be covered if they are involved in an accident. Even if you do not plan to loan your car to anyone, keep in mind that emergency situations occur, and make sure you know what to expect in the event that someone other than you must drive your vehicle. Insufficient coverage could have dire consequences, so make sure that you have a policy which covers all foreseeable conditions.
What Discounts Are Available?
You may be eligible for discounts of which you weren’t aware. And unless you ask, your new insurance company may not think to inform you that such discounts exist. This could include professional discounts, student discounts, and even the obvious discounts offered to people who maintain a safe driving record. And don’t forget that if this is a renewal, you may even receive a discount for remaining a loyal customer.
Will My Policy Cover Other Vehicles?
In almost all cases, your auto insurance policy is taken out on a specific vehicle, but in some cases it may be extended to a different one. Find out whether a rental vehicle will be covered, or whether your insurance will extend to a newly purchased vehicle for a limited grace period. These are both common occurrences where an insurance policy is used to cover a vehicle that is not specifically listed on the policy, but not all insurance policies offer either benefit.
