You know you need insurance, but there are so many choices available, that it is sometimes hard to decide which company is right for you. Do you want an independent agent, or would it be better to go through an agent that works directly for the insurance company? Should you purchase the insurance online, or go through a local agency? One thing is certain, and that is the solution of more than 50% of insurance buyers is the wrong one: don’t buy insurance from a particular company simply because you liked their television ad. That’s right, more than 50% of new insurance policies are taken out on the spur of the moment by people who happened to see a happy lizard, hairy caveman, or intriguing undercover agent flash a number in large font styles on their TV screen.
Do some research. Find out how financially stable the company you have chosen has proven itself to be. This can be accomplished by looking them up on websites provided by groups who rate the companies, such as A.M. Best, or even Standard & Poor. Follow up with some research into how dependable they have been about closing on claims and the level of customer service you can expect. When you sit down with an agent, they are going to want to know everything about you, including your credit rating, so arm yourself in advance by knowing the same things about them.
In many instances, an independent agent is going to be on your side, and work harder to get you the best deals. The simple reason for this is that a dedicated agent on the company payroll has no imperative to help you save money… they work for the company, and their only goal is to be that company’s representative. Independent agents will often help you shop and compare, striving to provide you with the best policy at the lowest price. Their reputation rests on having satisfied customers, and they take a few extra steps to make that happen.
There is nothing wrong with purchasing your insurance policy online. It is, however, far more important that you study the policy carefully before purchasing. If you do not have a live person to ask specific questions to, don’t purchase until you have had all of your concerns settled. Purchasing online is often a discount in itself, as you no longer have to allot time out of your day, or deal with traffic to make appointments, but a great deal of care should be used. Be comfortable with your purchase, or don’t make it. Take the time to have your questions answered, and choose a company that cares about you more than the bottom line.
